Self Defence Basics V

This final instalment in the Self Defence Basics series looks at a factor that is often overlooked, because it is sometimes too obvious.  Nevertheless, if you do not have the knowledge you cannot use that knowledge to your advantage and that is what this series of articles is all about, giving you an advantage.  Today, we look at:

Targets:

Targets are the embodiment of the physical aspects of self defence.  There are literally hundreds of targets on the human body but we will focus on just a handful.
Our objective is to identify targets that are easy to see, and therefore hit, and do not require a complex combination of techniques to expose them and then hit them.  It is an absolute truth, in self defence, that complexity equals difficulty and the objective must always be to keep it SIMPLE!
The basic and most effective targets are those that are easily accessed, e.g. head, groin, hands etc, and will cause enough shock and pain that you will be able to escape.  This is one of the most important points in this whole series; our objective is to cause enough shock and pain that you can ESCAPE!  It is not sensible, nor warranted, to attempt to cause grievous bodily harm, that will simply make you as guilty as your assailant and in fact, could end up with you serving a gaol sentence.
The best targets for accessibility, visibility and shock value, remember we are only wanting to get away not maim the attacker are:
  1. The bridge of the nose.
  2. The sternal notch (the dimple where the collarbones meet).
  3. The shins.
  4. Top of the foot.
  5. Inside thigh and,
  6. The groin.
Frankly, it doesn’t matter how you hit them, proper technique will be more effective but, as long as you hit them hard and run.  Bottom line; get the hell out of there.

We will not go into any detail with how to strike the targets, as it is a whole new level of learning and one that I believe cannot be taught effectively any other way than face-to-face.
