What are you afraid of?

Is fear of failure holding you back?

I wish I had one dollar for every time I have heard someone say “I wish I wasn’t so fat!” or, “I wish I could lose weight!”  I would be a wealthy man and would probably never have to work again.

I’ve lost count of the number of times I have witnessed overweight people think about doing something about their weight problems, only to decide to do nothing!  Why?  Because they are afraid of failure!  Attempting something so profound as changing their lifestyle scares the hell out of them, because they are terrified of failing and everyone else seeing that failure.  Well, do you know what?  They are already failing!

They are failing to live up to their full potential, they are failing to make positive changes to their lives and more importantly, they are failing to give themselves a life that is healthy and as long as it could be.

Imagine choosing to let your Grandchildren grow up without having experienced the joy of physical play with their Grandparents.  Imagine watching your children and/or grandchildren marrying from your hospital bed, because you are too ill to attend the service.  I don’t know how you would feel, but I would be devastated, especially if I am there because I chose to do nothing about my health and fitness.  How would you feel?

The simple truth is; no-one needs to be overweight, no-one needs, or deserves, to be obese, diabetic or carrying a high risk of atherosclerosis and stroke!  You can choose to change your lifestyle, extend your life and be fit and healthy into old-age but, you need also to face your fears and not allow yourself to become crippled by those fears.

Make the decision to be fit and healthy; then DO SOMETHING about it!  Seek professional help, talk to a Personal Trainer, Natural Therapist, your GP or all of them.  Nothing worthwhile is ever achieved easily and a healthier you is definitely worthwhile.

Understand that when you say that you “can’t” do something, you are really saying “I choose not to do that because failing terrifies me.”  You also have to understand that being scared is natural and it can be overcome, with the right support.  Instead of saying “can’t”, say “This is scary and I don’t know if I have what it takes to succeed.”  If you need support to make it happen, your Personal Trainer will be there for you.  Ask for support and be prepared to accept it.

I also often hear people say “but Personal Training is so expensive, I can’t afford it.”.  It is true that there is a cost for quality Personal Training but these are professionals in their chosen field and, like everyone else, are entitled to make a living from the exercise of their skills. Think about this; how much do you currently spend each week on take-away food, soft drinks, alcohol and cigarettes?  If you cut out or cut down on those items, how much more money would you have available?  Is personal training really too expensive, or are you choosing to find one more excuse for not confronting your health issues?

I challenge you to change your life!  Make the decision to be alive, fit and healthy as your grandchildren grow up!  Become the role-model your children and grandchildren will need as they grow into adulthood and are confronted with all of the temptations of our consumer-driven world.  Be the change you want to achieve!
